More than half of the US population uses mouthwash or rinse as part of their oral health routines. However, a vast majority of them don’t know much about mouthwash apart from the fact that they are available in different colors and flavors.
At Arden Dental Care in Sacramento, California, we answer many of our patients’ questions about oral hygiene products and help them choose the products that are right for them.
In this blog, we will be talking about a few myths and facts you need to know about mouthwash.
Here are a few common myths about mouthwash you may have heard of:
There is no substitute for brushing your teeth. At Arden Dental Care, Dr. Talluri advises that your oral habits should include at least 2 minutes of brushing two times per day.
You should then follow it up with an additional 30 seconds of rinsing with mouthwash.
Your mouthwash can act as a cleansing agent for your braces and other dental prosthetics. Why? The alcohol content in the mouthwash helps clean out all the bad bacteria lodged in the nooks and crannies of your oral appliances.
Halitosis or bad breath occurs due to poor oral hygiene, medication, infections, or health concerns. Mouthwash can mask bad breath only for a few minutes. The issue will persist unless you take steps to address the root cause of bad breath.
Now, let’s take a look at a few facts about mouthwash:
Fluoride mouthwashes are known to remineralize tooth enamel. Using them helps keep tooth decay at bay.
Pregnant women are highly susceptible to gum disease and other oral health issues. Hence, using mouthwash is highly recommended as it helps maintain their oral health.
Cosmetic and therapeutic mouthwash are the two types of mouthwash. While the former helps prevent bad breath, the latter helps treat underlying conditions related to oral health and kills the bacteria that causes it.
